DIY Fail: Puck Edition

i wanted to make a few more pucks like the Invaders puck that i keep at my desk:

no biggie, right?

this time around though, i wanted to do my own design. so i choose to attempt the simplest of Invaders logos... the shoulder patch:

i taped off the face of the puck with masking tape. i printed, to scale, colorless "wire" design. i then taped that on top of the first piece of masking tape. the puck was now face, masking tape, paper, masking tape. i knew you could see thru the top layer of tape, and cut thru all three layers. see for yourself:

no pics of the spray painting process, i didn't want to "yellow" up my camera phone (i'm a bit of a mess).

the paint stayed sticky, and didn't really jive with the smoothness of the puck like it did the first time around. so i wrapped it up in this nice note, and sent it to a lucky friend! is it you??? you'll know by tuesday-ish

and THAT'S a DIY fail! was fun to do though, and totally looking forward to the next one... because... you know what happens soon after a good DIY fail:

Monster Grip...

alright, it's the "Master Grip" but a famous one at that!!!

i scored this off of eBay recently:

straight outta Detroit City!

is the perfect accessory to my very favorite accessory:

seriously, i've carried that PBR bottle opener on a chain with me for well over 5 years now. if you see me and i DON'T have it, don't panic & seek help because there's something weird goin' on.

i have pretty busy fingers and i love to "fidget" with random things. as i look around my desk, i have a track wheel from an old mouse i spin, a huge nut & bolt i found that i spin, the Invaders hockey puck that i mess with, paper clips, velcro, pocket leatherman tools, etc.. but i always loved the way this just "lives." fits perfect in the hand, and the ball-chain just moves and flows like nothing else. sometimes i wear it too, not too often though...

why did i put an old steel bottle opener on a ball chain in the first place? well, maybe you've seen another one just like it:

and yes, heaven forbid if i ever lost it (happened a good 2 or 3 times)... i have back-up:

Couple things to take you into the weekend...

this first pic is for Ben Traxel. it's my old DIYed Invaders Puck.

never really posted it, because it didn't say "Invaders Hockey" to me... just the Invader guy on a puck. but, i promised Ben i'd snap a pic of it after he sent me this pic of a VERY creative use of a Uni Watch sticker!

how cool is that?!?! also featured on UW itself. check it out, click here:

next up is a knife that i have on my desk that i scribbled on, literally, years ago! charming little thing, and ALWAYS brings a smile to my face.

check out both sides below:

the Invaders are off to the ol' Labatt Hockey Tourney in Columbus, OH this weekend, wish us luck!

hope you all have a very happy Friday the 13th, and an all around great weekend!

Invaders Cover Up!!!

CIA secrets? alien vessel crash landing in our own backyard?

nah...

i'm just here to report that i no longer skate for the "Reebok" Invaders!

as promised, i deleted the front "Reebok" mark from my own jersey.

remember:

is now, this:

but upon further inspection...

who am i to not try something new (to me, anyways)?

"P I T" in "Invaders font"

PIT of course being the airport code for Pittsburgh. much like the Phoenix Suns who use "PHX" and the Atlanta Hawks "ATL"

the cover up material i used was a few shades off from the jersey color, and is a slightly different material itself. there is NO WAY i'm finding a match without cutting up the exact style jersey. so rather then sewing it on, and pretending to ignore it... i did something that i thought would almost make the slight difference "on purpose"

navy, on navy, on navy... 3 different materials and shades (including the twill used for the letters). can't see it from a distance... but if and when you DO spot a slight difference... and maybe take a closer look... it's kind of an "oh... cool!" feeling...

plus i didn't want to use another color for the letters because a) i didn't want to make the front of the jersey any more busy, and b) didn't want to stand out from my teammates too much.

Invaders White Jersey Update...

you guys remember the Invaders White Jersey with this logo on the front:

looked like this... back:

front:

me:

finished it up last February i believe.

well, i've made some pretty significant tweaks since then!

i was never too fond of the Invaders "I" patch on the shoulder

this "I" patch:

so i moved it to an area on hockey jerseys that doesn't usually have a patch... you'll see below.

also, i had Invaders Logo shoulder patches embroidered by my friends over at Pro Knitwear Pittsburgh. check it out:

so i added those to the same shoulder that i had the "I" patch removed from.

and last but not least... since this jersey won't be seeing "game" action any time soon, just "pick-up" action... i added a captain's "C" patch for all the hard work on the team jerseys...

have a look:

defintiely turned out just as i had planned... well...
