#40 of the day goes to...

above is Matt Robinson sportin' his new Terps uniform in their 32-24 win over the "Canes in College Park, MD

my thoughts?

when i first saw this jersey... i HATED IT! wrote it off immediately, as i do most college jersey garbage these days!

but... i have to admit, to be fair, it grew on me... BIG TIME!

i actually LIKE the jersey. i like what it's trying for. i did a total 180 on the damn thing. sure, there is a bunch of design elements that can be changed, and or flip-flopped. like the helmet/shoulder colors.

here is the right side:

here is the left (LOVE that side of the helmet):

and here is the Maryland flag:

quick fixes, it could ditch the compression sleeves, flip flop the helmet colors, ditch the pants stripes for something a tad bit more simple, and maybe throw on a nameplate for the kids. but other than that... i'd wear it

#40 of the day goes to...

was drinkin' it up with the fam friday night at the Harp & Fiddle, and had a great time. it's always to be expected when you mix my fun family and the H&F!

the Harp & Fiddle is located in one of my FAVORITE areas of Pittsburgh... the Strip District. spent many a weekend afternoon watering down after a stroll & eating binge through the Strip.

and look what is on the wall:

almost positive my family's roots can be traced back to Galway Bay... and my roots can be traced right down to a bar stool here.

hope you all have a safe, fun week!

#40 of the day goes to... a Pirate(s fan) looks at 40!

saw this gentleman at the Jimmy Buffett concert here in Pittsburgh last month (June 21st).

you can tell by the gold-black-gold sleeve ribbing that it's a current 2011 Pirates jersey. replica, no MLB logo on the back collar. and we all know the Buccos retired Murtaugh's #40

here is the song it is referencing. one of my favorite Buffett tunes:

i got a kick out of it!

#40 of the day goes to...

my submission to the Pittsburgh Penguins for a 40th anniversary patch (a few years ago, of course):

well, you know my favorite number... and well, you know my favorite team... so it all seemed natural that i would submit this patch, and the Pens would... not contact me at all ;-)

still love 'em though!

check it out...

i used a design element found on these beauts:

(Penguins 25th anniversary patch)

(NHL 75th anniversary patch)

simple enough, i traced out the penguin in AutoCAD:

then drew up the lines taken from the 25th & 75th patches:

finished result:

*pulled the images of the patches from the great website & resource: PittsburghHockey.net

hope you all have a great, safe weekend!

#40 of the day goes to... (2nd round Stanley Cup Playoffs Edition)

the 40s (as listed on the NHL roster (Dustin Tokarski, i'm looking at you)) remaining in the playoffs:

starting with backup, backup goalie Dustin Tokarski:

Kent Huskins, seen here on Feb 9th, has missed 20+ games (and is still out) with an "upper body" injury. bummer:

Tuukka Rask. always a possibility he'll see time during the playoff season

one of the coolest names in hockey, Maxim LaPierre:

(easy around that crease, big fella!)

and last but not least, one of my favorite non-penguins, Z:

(IR during the first round with a wonky ankle... he's skating again)

the other bottom feeders left in the playoffs aren't worth mentioning. they are dirty and lack a #40

naturally, my pick is Detroit. the best #40 in the NHL, one of the best uniforms in the NHL, great history, Pavs, "the Joe" is awesome, and they can put together an opening video like nobody's business:

this music is TOO bad ass:

keep "howlin' on" through the playoffs, boys:

hope everyone has an awesome, safe weekend!

40OTD guest post! TK version...

in honor of opening day, guest spot from Terence Kearns

J.J. Putz wore number 44 in Seattle,, but wore the beloved, Big Four-O, at his Presser in December 2008, after a trade from Seattle.

Oddly enough, his chose to wear number 22 that season, and maybe the switch had something to do with his less than stellar performance for the Mets in 2009, as he only saved 2 games in 29 appearances with a 5.22 ERA, and his season was over by June. A great excerpt from www.MBTN.net sums up Putz's tenure with the Mets:

"A top closer with Seattle but not yet paid  like one, Putz's acquisition, announced the day after the Mets signed closer F Rodriguez, provided the biggest jolt of 2008 off season and almost a comical act of compensation for a beleaguered bullpen."

Some have pointed to his unfortunate surname as an explanation of his performance as a Met, but I submit that it was his poor decision to switch Uni numbers...
Terence M.K.

couldn't agree with you more, TK! Putz is such a... ahhh, nevermind! thanks!

#40 of the day goes to... (St Paddy's Day Edition)

cramming in a couple today, actually:

first up, Kurt Thomas of the Bulls wearing their St. Paddy's day get-up:

pretty sharp jersey, can't hate it! but the Bulls logo and color scheme have always been one of my favorites. and when i think of the Bulls, i think of those dominant MJ teams.

love the logo so much, in fact, that i bought a Bulls patch off of eBay for a future DIY. the only problem is that the description didn't mention the "Chicago Bulls" lettering. see my patch:

no biggie though, i have scissors...

the next #40's of the day goes to, "The Definitive Notre Dame Uniform History Pictorial" posted by One Foot Down

first up, the 1977 Fighting Irish during a fan-packed preseason game:

then 1992, we have Reggie Brooks:

another cool shot of Reggie (not from the site):

that's great!

i don't feel like typing anymore, so that's it for today's (Irish themed) #40's!

p.s.
TK, i'll run your #40OTD guest post soon! promise! and hope you have a safe trip across PA to visit us this weekend. we'll try to show you a great time!

#40 of the day goes to...

my hometown (couple years before i was born), Pittsburgh Condors!

that's John Brisker wearing a real bad-ass (future DIY?) jersey!

interesting story too (according to Wikipedia, anyway). Detroit born was a bruiser/all star with the Condors, played a couple seasons with the Super Sonics, and went missing in Uganda of all places. go read:

if you remember, the Condors had an awesome logo:

(thank one of my FAVORITE sites for that, Chris Creamer)

oh! and BIG thanks to "Jimbo" James Huening for posting the "sombraro" pic in the Uni Watch comments section!
